An interesting Geekbench 2 result for a Mac with an unfamiliar model identifier appeared on the Geekbench Browser late last month. Similar to other unknown Macs that have appeared on the Geekbench Browser there has been a lot of speculation as to whether this result is an unreleased Mac or a clever forgery.

Like those other unknown Macs I believe this result is legitimate. Like the other results, the system information is quite consistent and, as MacRumors states, the Mac uses a new motherboard that was referenced in early Mountain Lion builds but has not yet been seen in a production Mac.

What’s also interesting about this result is that is the model identifier itself. Here are the model identifiers for the current MacBook Pro lineup:

13-inch 15-inch
Regular Display MacBookPro9,2 MacBookPro9,1
Retina Display ? MacBookPro10,1

If this unknown model identifier, MacBookPro10,2, follows this pattern then that means the Geekbench 2 result is from an unreleased 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro. While model identifiers tend to change between lineups, they tend to be consistent within the same lineup. I believe that we’ll see an Ivy Bridge 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro sooner rather than later.
